CCTV: Have-a-go hero in Walsall fights off gunman in his newsagents
CCTV footage shows the owner fighting back with a repellent spray
The owner of a newsagents in Walsall, became a have-a-go hero after his shop was targeted by a gunman, all of which was caught on CCTV.
The armed robber entered Kobani Stores, on West Bromwich Street, just before midnight on Monday, January 9 and pointed a hand gun at the owner, who was behind the shop counter.
However, the 39-year-old owner was having none of it and fought back, using a repellent spray he had under the counter to spray into the gunman’s face, which led to the man running out of the shop empty handed.
The quick thinking reactions of the shop owner have been commended by the police, who have now released CCTV footage of the incident showing the gunman.
The police are now appealing to members of the public for help in finding the suspect.
“We would like to commend the bravery of the owner, who refused to hand over cash after the man threatened him,” said Detective Constable Gerry Maley, from Walsall Police’s CID.
The Detective Constable said that the whole incident must have been terrifying for the shop owner but still he refused to feel intimidated by the gunman.
The police believe that two other people were involved and waited outside the shop for the gunman to come out. Officers are now determined to track down the perpetrators and are of the opinion that someone out there will know who the suspects are.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward and appeal for anyone who might recognise the gunman from the CCTV footage to contact DC Gerry Maley on 101, quoting Crime Reference: 20WS/7007D/17.
